Mercer’s Zirconia Flap Discs are high-performance abrasive discs designed for tough grinding, blending, finishing, and edge work on ferrous and non-ferrous metals. They offer sharper cutting, longer life, and smoother finishes compared to standard aluminum-oxide flap discs, especially in demanding applications like stainless steel, cast iron, and heavy stock removal.
Feature
Details & Benefits
Abrasive Material
Zirconia grain — tougher, more self-sharpening, better resistance to heat and loading, compared to many traditional abrasives.
Density Options
Standard Density or High Density versions. High Density discs have about 40% more cloth/abrasive material, giving longer life, smoother grind, and better performance in heavy removal tasks.
Disc Types / Shapes
• Type 27 (flat): best for working on flat surfaces; used between ~0–15° angle.
• Type 29 (conical or “mini-flared”): better for edge work or more aggressive angle grinding.
Backing & Construction
Strong fiberglass backing, X-weight cloth support; resin bonds that resist loading. Disc design helps cool cutting, and durable backing improves safety and stability.
Size / Grit Range
Common sizes: 4-1/2″, 5″, 7″ diameters; arbor sizes such as 5/8-11 and 7/8″. Grits typically from 24 (coarse) up to 120 (fine) for finishing.
Operating RPM
Discs rated up to typical angle grinder speeds (~12,000-13,300 RPM depending on size).
Angle of Use
Best performance when used at low angles (0-15°) for Type 27; Type 29 allows somewhat higher angles for edge/finned work.
